Matias Klarwein was born on the 9th of April in Hamburg, Germany. He is an artist of amazing technical virtuosity. He was an inspiration to so many artists because he expressed the freedom to imagine and paint anything. In he went to Hamburg and created set paintings for the film Herman Hesse’s Steppenwolf. From his early work , which already exhibited this technical mastery, through the psychedelic surrealism of the sixties and seventies, to the later landscapes of his beloved Mallorca, much of Mati’s work displays an enhanced perception of beauty that most of us experience only occasionally in our lives. Although Mati produced some of the most iconic images of the 60’s and 70’s, his name, and much of his work, remains unknown to many. Klarwein’s painting Annunciation from was seen in reproduction by the musician Carlos Santanawho subsequently used it as the cover image of his band Santana ‘s second album Abraxas. Often summarized as graphic artist, Eric Gill was a sculptor, typeface designer, stonecutter and printmaker.

Perhaps no surprise then that in his work he likes to challenge our assumptions on everything from religion and sexuality to the perceiver and the perceived. Mati’s most unique installation was the Aleph Sanctuary, a cubic room comprised of 68 paintings including the ‘Tree of Life’ requiring a guard at its entrance in the Museum of Mato in Santa Barbara, California.
